Barnet Copthall Masters Sprint Meet, 5 September 2010
Well done to the small team who won eight individual medals and two team medals at the Barnet Copthall Sprint Meet on Sunday.

Kim Brinkman took bronze in the 25-29 age group 100m IM and Jonathan Campbell won bronze in the 30-34 years 100m back.

Bryan Hoffman came home with a gold medal in the 30-34 years 50m Breaststroke and silver in the 100m Breaststroke.

Competing in his first ever competition Kevin van Schalkwyk missed out on the medals but did great times in his 50m and 100m Free races.

Swimming in the 40-44 category Sarah Wren won gold in the 100m Breaststroke, and bronze in the 50m and 100m Free, and 100m IM.

The squad also took bronze in the 120 years Medley and Freestyle team races.

Lisa Williams takes silverHellespont Swim, 30 August 2010
This traditional swim race crosses the Hellespont starting in Europe and finishing in Asia. It has been held for the last 25 years, drawing swimmers from around Turkey and overseas.

This year’s race attracted 253 swimmers who tackled the crossing in poor weather conditions. Lisa finished second in the 31-35 years women’s category in a time of 55.54 minutes. Lisa received her silver medal from the local mayor in a podium ceremony.

Congratulations to Lisa Williams for taking the silver medal in her category in the annual Hellespont Swim on Monday 30th August.

 

 

Nokia Thames Swim 2010

Nokia Thames Swim, Sunday 1 August 2010
Masters swimmers Matt McQuillan, Lisa Williams and Sarah Wren competed with 1,200 others in the first ever Nokia Thames Swim on Sunday 1 August 2010. The scenic course covered 2.25mles (3,650m) from Hampton Court Palace to Kingston upon Thames.
Matt completed the distance in 50:28, coming 23rd overall and 5th in his category (mens 40-45 age group).
Sarah finished 93rd overall and 2nd in her category (womens 40-45 years) in a time of 58:18.
Lisa, who was still recovering from a sailing accident the previous weekend, took the swim more slowly, finishing in 1:05:32. This still put her in the top fifth (256th) and 19th in her category (womens 30-34 years).


Lisa Williams in the Great London SwimGreat London Swim, Sunday 3 July 2010

Sunday 3 July saw over 5,000 swimmers taking part in the Great London Swim in Royal Victoria Dock. Continuing her summer of open water competitions, Penguin Master Lisa Williams completed the 1.6k course in a fast time of 28.26. 
Lisa finished 75th in her category and 103 woman overall. Great result!
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
7th Annual Henley Swim, Sunday 27 June 2010
Henley SwimCongratulations to Matt McQullan from our Masters team who came 6th out of 262 swimmers in the 7th Annual Henley Swim on Sunday 27 June 2010. Matt's time was 29m 14s.
 
The 2.1k race follows the route of the official Henley Regatta and is a celebration of mid-summer. Swimmers arrive in the dark before daybreak and walk to the start ready to swim at sunrise.
 
 
River Arun swim, Saturday 26 June 2010
Well done to Edwina Waddell and Lisa Williams who took part in the River Arun 3.8k Ironman swim on Saturday 26 June.
The event was supposed to be with the tide but someone forgot to tell the river this and much of the swim was against the current because the tide didn't turn!
Despite this both our swimmers did great times -- Edwina finished in 1.02.28 and Lisa in 1.04.33, coming 9th and 11th respectively in their category.
 
  
  
Middlesex Masters, Sunday 6 June 2010
Stu the PenguinWell done to Penguins who swam at the Middlesex Masters on Sunday, and welcome to our new mascot - Stu the Penguin (pictured right). Everyone swam amazingly and we were by far and away the best cheering team of the meet! 
  • Janusz Kordonski, competing in the men's 45-49 age group, brought home gold in the 50m breast, silver in the 200m free, and bronze in the 50m fly, 50 free and 100m IM.
  • Jonathan Campbell (30-34 years) won bronze in the 200m free.
  • Kim Brinkman (25-29 years) won bronze in the 50m breast.
  • Matt McQuillan (40-44 years) took bronze in the 50m breast, 100m IM and 50m fly.
  • Pierre Coutin (50-54 years) defended his title with gold in the 50m breast, also winning the 50m fly and taking silver in the 50m free.
  • John Barnes (55-59 years) took gold in the 50m back and silver in the 50m free.
  • In the team relays we won 3 silver and one bronze.
  • James Spencer, Andrew March, David Fallon, Montserrat Verdugo-Sanchez, Lisa Williams, Edwina Wardell and Steve Baker also had strong swims in their individual and team races.

With only 4 ladies competing, the Women's team ranked 9th overall while the men's contingent of 9 swimmers placed 7th.

Overall for the day the Penguins ranked 7th out of the 17 teams.  Full results.

 
 
Bracknell Masters 15th Open Meet - March 2010
Janusz Kordonski and David Fallon competed in the Bracknell Masters meet on Saturday 6 March 2010.

Janusz, swimming in the 45-49 years age group took part in an impressive eight events - 100m Fs (5th), 100m IM (3rd), 100m Bs (2nd), 50 Fs (4th), 50 fly (3rd), 50m Bs (2nd), 200m IM (DQ) and 200m Fs (3rd). This strong performance gave him second place overall in his age group.

David, swimming in the same age group, competed in the 200m IM (4th), 100m Bs (5th) and 50m fly (8th).

ASA Masters Swimming Championships - October 2009
Penguin Masters swimmer Karen Brown took bronze in the 50-54yrs 50m backstroke at the British Gas ASA Masters Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge Sheffield on Friday 23 October 2009.
  
 
 
Great Big Open Water Swim - 3k - Saturday 12 September 2009  
Penguin Masters swimmers at Great Big Open Water Swim Sept 09Well done to Caroline, Lisa, Edwina and Janusz who took part in the 3k Great Big Open Water Swim at Dorney Lake on Saturday 12 September 2009.

Caroline was the 3rd fastest female and finished 2nd in her age group (25-29 years). Her time of 46m 40s put her 16th overall.

Edwina won the 30-34 age group in a time of 48m 49s. She was 4th fastest female and 24th overall. Close behind, Lisa took 2nd place in the same age group and was 5th female in a time of 50m 33s. This placed her 29th overall. 

Swimming without a wetsuit, Janusz completed the distance in 49m 52s, finishing 4th in the 40-44 years category and 25th overall.

Barnet Copthall Masters Distance Meet - July 2009
Well done to Karen Brown who won bronze in the womens 50-54 years 200m back and 100m back at Barnet Copthall on 18 & 19 July 2009. Karen also swam in the 400m free and 200m free events.

Go Penguin! Penguin swimmers competing in the annual Middlesex Masters competition at Southbury Leisure Centre on Sunday 7 June 2009 brought home a hoard of bronze, silver and gold medals.
